Use cases

  • Basic MBB metrics

Key performance metrics to be monitored:

1) network tomography: performance and reliability parameters;
2) route analytics: network topology inference;
3) traffic analysis: passive measurements with TSTAT.

Optional metrics include:

1) model-based bulk performance metrics and
2) models for channel quality.

  • Application performance

User-centric measurement has attracted a lot of attention recently, especially as a complement to present network-centric measurement. In addition to generic network performance metrics, it is of great interest to understand how users perceive individual services and applications (e.g., video/audio streaming, gaming, conferencing, etc.) over different terminals (e.g., mobile phones, tablets, and computers). Since these services have different requirements on performance and defined different application-level metrics, their perceived quality should be assessed separately. What expected to be measured includes: 1) device information; 2) application-oriented performance metrics for each type of services; 3) content information (e.g., codec, resolution, sending bitrate); 4) contextual information (location, time, etc.). Synthetic tools could be provided to integrate these data and produce estimations of user perception in different network conditions.

  • Multipath and transport protocols

Transport protocols such as MPTCP can make use of multiple network paths. Applications using single-path protocols such as standard TCP can also benefit from management of multiple active paths to use a route with the highest bandwidth, achieve faster fail-over, or use parallel TCP connections over different paths to take advantage of the total available capacity. Different transport protocol configurations may also provide vastly different performance. These experiments are grouped into multiple use cases: 1) active measurements to test path support; 2) protocol performance optimisations; 3) traffic offloading between MBB and Wifi; 4) multipath performance measurements; 5) passive multipath performance measurement.

  • D2D, V2I, V2V

Motivations for this use case include: testing new offloading technologies and services based on D2D, social networking becoming context-aware as well as data connectivity in the social being unexplored. The use case requires active measurement and applications to discover D2D pairs, connect and exchange social and context-aware data. It also requires to have mobile nodes and (optionally) fixed nodes. Tests to cover WiFi Direct (WiDi) connectivity, WiFi aware discovery functionalities, floating content services and offloading opportunities with realistic  mobility patterns under different technologies.
